Candidates for Horizon School Division Board Sarah Sunderland and Jim Lissinna
Categories

Tomorrow is the day voters in the Horizon School Division go to the polls to select their Trustee members for the Board. While a number of Trustees have been decided through acclamation, there are subdivisions where the Board is counting on strong voter turnout.

One such subdivision is Number 7, which covers the communities of Archerwill, Rose Valley and Kelvington and their surrounding areas. Two candidates are vying for the position.

Sarah Sunderland resides on a farm outside of Rose Valley. She currently has a position on the School Community Council and Community Group.

Sarah also sits on the Telemiracle Board of Directors where she says her “true passion was to help people who can’t advocate for themselves while following set policies and procedures.”

Sunderland has worked as an EA in the school system, and she has been employed by Community Inclusion Support Services before becoming a full-time mother and volunteer.

“As a strong advocate for your children and mine, I want to be your voice this term,” Sunderland says in her candidate statement. “I promise to continue asking hard questions and challenging the system using evidence.”

Jim Lissinna is a long-time educator from Kelvington who is wrapping up his first term as subdivision 7 Trustee. Lissinna added trustee to his 42-year career which has included being a teacher, principal, and substitute teacher.

In his candidate statement, Lissinna says, “This background has allowed me to develop a great understanding of the public education system and a unique insight into its workings. I am a strong proponent of public education and will continue to work hard to ensure it does not become eroded.”

Lissinna says he stands fully prepared to answer the tough questions and to be prepared to challenge what has been accepted in the past.

He tells voters, “It has been an honor to have served you in this capacity and I am hoping that I can count or your support to fulfill this position for another term.”
