Airdrie motorists heading into Calgary should prepare for a temporary full closure of the 4th Avenue flyover, a key route downtown, as construction work shifts to the right side of the bridge.
The closure will start at 9 p.m. tonight and last until 5 a.m. Monday, November 18. It is part of the city’s plan to extend the flyover’s service life by 35 years. This weekend’s closure will allow workers to focus on the next phase of repairs on the right side of the bridge.
During the closure, motorists can enter downtown via the Reconciliation Bridge. Following this full closure, expect additional overnight lane restrictions on Riverfront Avenue, Memorial Drive, and Edmonton Trail throughout November and December to complete the installation of a work platform on the bridge’s right side.
Since spring 2024, traffic has been limited to one lane while crews work on critical upgrades, including barrier improvements and new lighting installations.
Built in 1982, the 4th Avenue flyover has served Calgary commuters for over four decades. With a $12.5 million budget, the project is set to upgrade the flyover to improve safety and support traffic flow for years. Completion is on track for fall 2025, with crews working continuously, even through winter, to keep the project moving forward.
