BIGGAR, SK – After a spree of vehicle thefts that had residents of the Biggar area on edge, RCMP apprehended a suspect, providing a measure of relief to the community.
In early November, Sgt. Dereck Crozier of the Biggar RCMP described a thief whose antics were as notorious as a “well-known green frog,” referring to the suspect’s pattern of stealing vehicles and swapping them across the region.
The incidents began with a truck stolen from the Perdue Golf Course, later recovered in Kerrobert. From there, a stolen GMC Sierra was found on 3rd Avenue East in Biggar, and another F-350 was recovered on 6th Avenue East.
Arrest and Updates
On November 13, Unity RCMP arrested 35-year-old Travis Kurmey from Radisson. Kurmey, who has an extensive record of vehicle thefts and has been linked to drug distribution in the area, was picked up on outstanding charges and for breaching his Conditional Sentence Order (CSO).
He was remanded to custody in North Battleford and appeared in court on November 18. While it’s unclear if Kurmey was released, Sgt. Crozier’s November 18 update indicated that for the time being, rural property owners could “rest a little easier” with Kurmey behind bars.
Impact on the Community
Sgt. Crozier acknowledged that while Kurmey’s arrest might disrupt certain “supply chains” for others, the arrest has been a positive step in curbing the string of vehicle thefts that had plagued the region.
The Biggar RCMP continues to monitor the situation and reminds residents to secure their vehicles and report any suspicious activity. This arrest highlights the collaborative efforts of local law enforcement in ensuring community safety.
Kurmey’s next court date is yet to be confirmed, but RCMP will provide further updates as the case progresses.
