Keith Wilson of Unity, a lifelong volunteer and advocate for recreation, has been named the recipient of the Volunteer Champion Award as part of the 2024 Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) Sask Recreation Awards. Wilson’s dedication to enhancing trails, green spaces, and community connections has left an enduring impact on his hometown.

The Importance of Volunteerism

For small communities like Unity, volunteers like Wilson are essential. Unity’s Culture, Parks, and Recreation Director Lisa Feser underscored the value of volunteer efforts in bolstering town programs.

“In small towns, especially now, budgets and staff are stretched so thin,” Feser said. “Volunteers step in and fill gaps. The services and support they provide just better the quality of life for everyone in town. Keith’s work on the walking path is a huge, huge thing we all benefit from. There’s so much he’s done that has helped us out, especially my department.”

Transforming Trails, Transforming Lives

In 2023, Wilson coordinated funding from local organizations, raising $100,000 to extend Unity’s trail system. The project tripled the length of available pathways, adding new paved and gravel sections.

“The trails are accessible to everyone, day or night, without needing to pay admission like at other facilities,” Wilson said. “It’s something that benefits everyone in our community.”

Wilson’s passion for recreation stems from his 29-year tenure as Unity’s recreation director. Even after retiring, he continues to champion initiatives that unite the community and promote active living.

Celebrating Dedication

As part of the Volunteer Champion Award, Wilson received $1,000, which he donated to the Unity Lions Club to establish a maintenance fund for the trail system. “This ensures the trails remain in good shape for years to come and gives the club an ongoing project that benefits everyone,” he said.

Unity’s Culture, Parks, and Recreation Director Lisa Feser shared a message of congratulations. “Keith, this is so well-deserved. Be proud—you truly deserve this recognition.”

Acknowledging Recreation’s Role

SPRA President Darcy McLeod praised the award recipients for their contributions. “The Sask Recreation Awards showcase the positive impact recreation has across our province,” McLeod said. “These accomplishments inspire others to lead by example.”

Wilson also commended SPRA for recognizing the importance of recreation in small towns. “Awards like this highlight deserving individuals and communities and bring attention to the great work being done across Saskatchewan,” he said.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Wilson encourages others to embrace volunteerism, highlighting its impact on building stronger communities. “If you don’t get involved, you’re missing out on building a better future for yourself, your family, and your neighbours,” he said.

For Feser, Wilson’s contributions exemplify how volunteerism enhances community life. “Keith’s work has made a tangible difference in Unity, and we’re all better for it,” she said.

Unity’s Volunteer Champion

Wilson’s efforts demonstrate the lasting power of volunteerism to bring people together, foster healthy lifestyles, and create a legacy of connection for future generations. His work, and the recognition it has earned, stands as an inspiration for others to follow.
