As the sun begins to peek out for the first time since an intense low pressure system dropped over a foot of snow in central Saskatchewan, RCMP continues to deal with the upshot.

A statement by provincial RCMP notes that at 11:31 pm on Tuesday, November 19, the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway #1 between Balgonie and the Manitoba border were closed due to drifting and blowing snow. No injuries have been reported to police at this time. However, there are reports of many vehicles stopped on, as well as on the side, of the highway between White City and St. Joseph’s.

The Highway Hotline reports roads have reopened but that travel is not recommended on the Number 1 and on several adjacent highways.

Winter weather conditions continued overnight in many parts of the province. Between 8:30 a.m. on November 19 and 8:30 a.m. on November 20, 2024, Saskatchewan RCMP received 120 reports of weather-related motor vehicle collisions and incidents throughout the province.

Drifting and blowing snow is expected to continue throughout the day, hindering road conditions and visibility. If poor weather or road conditions exist or are forecasted in your area, consider delaying travel if possible. If travel is necessary, stay on roads that have recently received road maintenance.

If you have to stop on a highway for any reason, please pull over to the right shoulder if it’s possible and safe. Don’t block intersections.

If you are stranded or stopped roadside, Saskatchewan RCMP urge you do the following:

  • Always stay with your vehicle.

  • Stay warm. Periodically turn your vehicle on, but be mindful to conserve your fuel and battery.

  • Make sure your tailpipe remains clear of ice and snow, or carbon monoxide could potentially seep into your vehicle.

  • Periodically lower your window slightly on the side of your vehicle that is downwind, allowing for fresh air to enter the vehicle.

Saskatchewan RCMP continue to remind travellers to access information about road conditions and track which roads have been plowed, salted, and/or sanded within the last two hours at hotline.gov.sk.ca/map.   For more information on how to prepare for winter driving, visit Saskatchewan RCMP: take precautions when hitting the road during winter weather | Royal Canadian Mounted Police (rcmp-grc.gc.ca)
