Steinbach City Council has approved the first reading of a conditional use application to allow a new daycare center in the Millbrook Market neighbourhood. The daycare, to be operated by Kinder Korner Early Learning Centre, will be located at 59 Market Boulevard and will serve as the fourth location for the growing childcare provider.
According to its website, Kinder Korner currently cares for 183 children at its three existing Steinbach locations, and the new facility will add more spaces to meet the growing demand for childcare in the city.
The new daycare center will be part of the Millbrook Market’s mixed-use development, which includes residential, retail, and office spaces.
Keith Unger, representing Millbrook Market, expressed excitement about the project, noting that the location offers a great fit for both families and businesses.
"It just seems like a good fit for a place for people to live, work, and have childcare," said Unger during the public hearing on Tuesday, November 19th.
The new daycare also holds a special significance for the community, as it was a vision of the late Garth Reimer, a strong leader in Steinbach’s health sector. Reimer, who passed away in 2023, was described as a visionary and a mentor with a strong conviction for healthcare. His work, including his leadership as Chair of the Bethesda Foundation, touched many lives.
"It’s really special to know that Garth Reimer was the one who initiated this project," said Councillor Susan Penner. "Even after his passing, his legacy continues to make a difference in Steinbach, and we’re grateful for his contributions to this community."
Council members were enthusiastic about the new daycare, with Penner calling it an excellent location due to its proximity to employment opportunities like HyLife and nearby retail stores.
"This is going to be high in demand... daycare spaces are very important in this day and age, where families often have to have two incomes," said Penner.
Councillor Damian Penner added that the area's rapid development and growing housing market make the daycare a crucial resource for working families.
The proposal was met with widespread support, with no objections at the public hearing.
And Mayor Earl Funk echoed the need for more daycare spaces in the community. "In today’s day and age with both spouses working, there needs to be daycare. If one thing we lack, it's daycare," Funk said. Council unanimously approved First Reading of the conditional use application.
The project will move forward pending final approvals.
