Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue (SAAR) is sending heartfelt thanks to the community for their incredible support. From financial donations to volunteer efforts, local residents have demonstrated their commitment to animal welfare. Their contributions have allowed SAAR to continue rescuing and rehabilitating animals, even in the face of challenges like the devastating flooding in September.
A Community of Thoughtful Donors
SAAR President Michelle Neufeld has seen firsthand the impact of this generosity.
"It’s extremely humbling when you see someone, especially a child, sacrifice their birthday presents to donate supplies or money to our rescue," Neufeld says. "One young girl even makes bracelets and donates part of the proceeds to us. It's moments like these that really show the kindness of our community."
It’s not just individuals who are stepping up, either.
"We’ve had families forgo buying adult gifts and instead donate that money to us," Neufeld says. "It’s these selfless acts that tug at your heartstrings and remind us that there is still so much good in the world."
Flood Recovery Update
While SAAR has made significant strides since the flooding disaster in September, the recovery process is ongoing. The shelter has been fully operational for some time now, though there’s still some work to be done.
"We’re about 90% of the way there," Neufeld reports. "We just need to replace some drywall in the basement, but the animals are back, and we’re up and running."
The organization has also been working with insurance to cover the costs of the damage. While things are still being sorted out, the shelter is making the best of the situation, thanks in part to the unwavering support from donors.
New Arrivals: Puppies in Need
Recently, SAAR received a call that led to the discovery of four puppies abandoned in a field in the R.M. of Ritchot. The puppies, estimated to be about 10 weeks old, were found without collars and no identification.
"It was heartbreaking," says Vice President Graham Pollock. "They were just dumped out there with no care for their well-being. Thankfully, someone found them and brought them to us."
This kind of rescue effort is costly, especially when it comes to veterinary care. "Our biggest expense is always the vet bills," Graham explains. "For these puppies, the total cost of their care—vet check-ups, vaccinations, spaying or neutering—will add up to about $350 to $400 per pup."
These costs are essential for ensuring the animals are healthy and ready for adoption.
The $5 Fur Relief Program
To help cover the high expenses, SAAR has launched the $5 Fur Relief Program, which makes it easy for people to donate regularly. "If everyone who follows us on Facebook donated just $5 a month, it would make a huge difference," Neufeld says. With around 8,000 followers, the potential to raise significant funds is clear. "Even a small donation can add up quickly when so many people participate."
Donors can easily set up automatic monthly transfers through the SAAR website, helping to ensure that funds are available to cover the ongoing costs of animal care. "It doesn’t take much to make a big impact," Neufeld continues. "A few dollars a month can go a long way in helping us continue to help these animals."
Partnerships with Local Veterinarians
A key part of SAAR’s success comes from their strong partnerships with local veterinarians.
"We have fantastic relationships with all the local vets," Neufeld says. "They provide us with great deals and are always willing to help us get animals seen as quickly as possible." These partnerships ensure that animals receive the care they need, even when resources are stretched thin.
Neufeld notes they work hard to pay their vet bills at the end of each month, adding that can sometimes be around $20,000.
How You Can Help
In addition to monetary donations, SAAR is always looking for volunteers and foster homes to support their growing number of animals. "Our foster families are incredible," Pollock says. "We provide everything from food to vet care, and all the foster families need to do is open their hearts and homes."

As the holidays approach, there's no better time to give back. Even a small contribution can make a big difference in the lives of the animals that SAAR rescues.
"Whether it’s through donations, fostering, or just spreading the word, every bit helps," Neufeld emphasizes. "The community’s support makes all the difference. We truly couldn’t do it without you."
