A thick blanket of freezing fog has settled over the Airdrie and surrounding area.
Near zero visibility freezing fog is occurring in some areas. Fog developed overnight and is expected to persist until late this morning. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for taillights ahead and be prepared to stop.
Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly on bridges, highways and off-ramps, as these areas are prone to icing in such conditions. While the fog lights on vehicles can help clear the immediate area in front of them, using high beams is discouraged as it can worsen visibility. Keeping headlights on ensures other drivers can spot vehicles on the road.
Thankfully, this fog is expected to lift later in the morning, improving visibility and reducing the risks associated with travel in these conditions.
Freezing fog forms when supercooled water droplets in the air come into contact with surfaces that are at or below freezing temperatures. With recent snowfall blanketing the region, a combination of warmer daytime temperatures and overnight cooling is creating ideal conditions for freezing fog. As the snow begins to melt during the day, moisture is released into the air. When temperatures dip below freezing after sunset, the moisture forms dense fog.
