Now that we've had a few accumulating snowfalls, residents are being reminded of the Town of Altona's snow clearing bylaw. The message comes as local police say they continue to field complaints from public works crews trying to clear snow from residential streets.
In Altona, street parking is prohibited during or after a snowfall until streets are fully cleared. If 5-7cm of snow is forecasted, move your car off the street to avoid a parking ticket. Police note, this means parking on streets could be prohibited in some areas for several days.
According to the Town, public works teams begin snow clearing as early as 5:00 a.m. and usually follow a set route for efficiency and access to priority roads.
Additionally, when shoveling your driveway, the Town asks that you please shovel the snow into your yard – not onto the road, street, lane, or boulevard. As well, stay at least 10 metres away from snow clearing equipment, remind children not to build forts or tunnels near the roads, and keep waste collection containers on your driveway back from the curb.
