An abbreviated fall sitting of the Saskatchewan Legislature came to an end on Tuesday.
Premier Scott Moe highlighted a couple of pieces that were passed, The Saskatchewan Affordability Act, which includes the largest personal income tax reduction since 2008 and The SaskEnergy Amendment Act which extends the carbon tax exemption on home heating.
"We know affordability continues to be top of mind for many Saskatchewan residents," Premier Moe said. "Which is why our government brought forward The Saskatchewan Affordability Act. It is the fulfillment of the commitment we made during the recent election campaign, and it aims to deliver long-term, sustainable support for all Saskatchewan residents and families.
Another promise that was made during the election campaign was to create safer neighbourhoods in the province. The government introduced The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Amendment Act to address challenges posed by abandoned properties the create a public nuisance and contribute to unsafe living conditions.
The Safe Public Spaces Act would allow municipalities and First Nations to opt in to new rules that regulate the possession, transportation and storage of items that may be used as street weapons, such as large knives, bear spray or machete.
The provincial NDP on the otherhand says the Sask Party government are continuing to deny their attempts to provide immediate cost-of-living relief to families struggling to make ends meet.
Regina Rochdale MLA Joan Pratchler attempted to introduce a motion Tuesday to “immediately suspend the collection of the provincial sales tax from children’s clothing in order to help families struggling with the high cost of living.”
The Sask NDP said the motion would have saved families $22 million annually.
Also, the opposition said the Sask Party government denied the Sask NDP motions to
Cut the gas tax, Cut the PST on groceries, and investigate and develop solutions to counter the sky-high price of food in the North.
With the election held in late October, the fall sitting was limited to a couple of weeks.
