An Altona-based company is once again playing an integral part in delivering a free book to every grade one student in Canada.

In a news release issued this week, Friesens announced its ongoing support and participation in the TD Grade One Book Giveaway, a program of The Canadian Children’s Book Centre. Over its 24-year involvement, the book manufacturer has printed and produced about 500,000 - 600,000 books through the initiative.

This year, Friesens printed the selected book, Violet Shrink, written by Christine Baldacchino, illustrated by Carmen Mok and published by Groundwood Books. Translated into French by Mireille Messier, francophone Canadians and French immersion students will receive copies of the French translation, Violette Cent-Soucis.

“The TD Grade One Book Giveaway fosters a community of readers across the country and builds excitement for books and reading,” says Stephanie Wells, Executive Director of the CCBC. “One of the tangible benefits of the program is that all children are included, some receiving their very own book for the first time. In recognition of the importance of sharing books together at home, this year we are also including tips on reading aloud and sharing stories for parents and caregivers.”

"Friesens has always been a strong advocate in promoting the benefits of literacy and ensuring that we use every opportunity to instill the love of books and reading to every child," noted the company statement. "The greatest gift we can give our children is the ability to read and form a love for the written word, helping them to increase their knowledge and understanding of the world around them."

The Canadian Children’s Book Centre donated the books, and Friesens covered the freight and logistics to get them to their destination.

"Friesens has been in business for over 117 years, and we are happy to be a part of these sponsorship programs as we continue to help our customers share their best story with the world through the power of print."
