Several children were sent to hospital over the weekend due to a carbon monoxide leak at Rockyford Arena.
The Rockyford Fire Department responded to the leak at around 7 p.m. on Saturday (Dec.14). According to the village, the 911 call was made by a hockey team using the ice that day.
A post on the village's Facebook page claims that a group of children became ill with carbon monoxide poisoning and were taken to the Alberta Children's Hospital.
The arena was evacuated, and ATCO was contacted to assess the situation. The cause of the leak was determined to be a defective radiant heater.
According to Lori Miller, chief administrative officer, six children were taken to hospital, with three needing to spend the night.
"We're just happy to say that everybody seems to be doing well. There's no serious long-term effects that we're aware of."
The rink remains closed and is expected to reopen by the end of the week.
"The Village of Rockyford and the Rockyford Ag Society extend our best wishes for a swift and full recovery to all those affected," wrote the village. "The arena will remain closed until the necessary repairs to the heaters are completed and a follow-up inspection is conducted to ensure the safety of all."
This is a developing story, and StrathmoreNow will provide an update once more details are known.
