The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of a man in RCMP custody.

Early Friday morning, the Carlyle RCMP received a report of an assault on White Bear First Nation. Officers responded and found two people who were injured. A man was taken to hospital with injuries that were described as serious, and a woman was taken to hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

Officers arrested a 49-year-old man from White Bear First Nation at the scene without incident, and he was taken to the Carlyle detachment, where he was held in cells, and monitored by staff through the night.

Around 9 a.m. Friday morning, it was reported an officer saw that the man was experiencing medical distress, and the officer began to administer first aid until EMS arrived. The man, however, was declared deceased by the EMS.

The Serious Incident Response Team investigates any police-involved death in the province.

The original incident remains under investigation, with the Carlyle RCMP being assisted by the General Investigation Section.
