Chestermere RCMP were alongside local firefighters for the Candy Cane Checkstop in the city.

The event ran from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 17) at Chestermere Boulevard, with around 400 vehicles going through to learn about safe winter driving.

"We're greeting the public and giving back to them for driving safely during the holiday season," said Eli Steinfeld with municipal enforcement. "Our primary goal is to say thank you and let people know about safe ways to get home."

Steinfeld added that the event gives police an opportunity to have the public see them in a better light.

"Sometimes they see us with the red and blue lights behind them it's not great."

Hundreds of drivers made it through the Candy Cane Checkstop in Chestermere on Tuesday night.

According to Ty Tomasta, communications manager with the City of Chestermere, police took one driver off the road during the event for impaired driving.

For other drivers who passed through, they were given a variety of treats from firefighters and police alike.

"We're giving out candy canes, some stickers from the RCMP, and some pamphlets from our partner, Synergy," added Steinfeld.

Synergy is a local group that offers leadership and wellness education for residents and nonprofits in the area.
