The Strathmore Fire Department made a generous donation to the Wheatland County Food Bank.

On Tuesday (Dec. 17) the Food Bank announced that the firefighters donated 1,411 pounds of food and $1,662 in an unexpected delivery.

"They were pretty floored as we kept bringing the boxes in," said Fire Chief Dave Sturgeon. "They were surprised by how much we actually did in that time frame. They were super appreciative of everything we did for them."

After reading about the food bank's urgent need for items during the holiday season, the department decided to garner donations at the local Sobey's grocery store.

"We talked with people in the parking lot, and they were more generous than we thought they would be," added Sturgeon.

By the end of their run, the Fire Department filled up two of their trucks with food donations.

"A lot of it was diapers, hygiene products, and things they were really in need of."

Despite the work of the firefighters, Sturgeon said that they wouldn't have been able to get as many donations if it weren't for the generosity of the community.

"Thanks to everybody in the town who came by and donated. It really shows when everybody comes together what they can do. We were just the conduit to get it there."

The Strathmore Fire Department also does a March fundraiser alongside Holy Cross Collegiate for the food bank.
