We took to the streets and headed out to a few local businesses to see if we could help spur some inspiration.

Our first stop was to Shoppers Drug Mart in Winkler where we spoke with store manager, Myla Heinrichs.

"We have lots of beautiful plush blankets right now. Lots of bath sets, mugs and chocolate, fragrances are a huge hit, and we've got the mascara samplers. All sorts of things right now."

But what about the men in your life?

"We have beautiful fragrances for men right now," said Heinrichs. "We also have robes and slippers, games."

What about something green?

Next, we headed off to New Leaf Garden Centre where owner, Lucy Janzen, suggested house plants, noting they are loved by people of all ages.

"Grandmas still love to have their classics that they've always had in the house and something to take care of in their home. Kids are in here all the time buying a cactus or a cool succulent. Venus Fly Traps are great for kids. They love to try that kind of thing. We've got those in-store as well."

Janzen added, Tropicals are also a great option.

"Bird of Paradise are super if you've got a huge space. We've got a small starter-size of that that's super if you really want to try a Bird of Paradise but in a smaller size. There are things like coffee plants if you've got a coffee bar or are really into coffee, and that's a smaller plant. ZZ Plants, Snake Plants, those are plants that are super easy for anybody. They thrive on neglect, so the more you neglect them the better they do."

Something for the hobbyist

Then we were off to Janzen's Paint and Decorating, where Mark Janzen said they've got options to suit all interests, including the very popular LEGO selection.

"We've got LEGO for all ages. There's pretty much something for everyone there. Our board game and puzzle selection we try to keep very big and there's lots of ideas there. We have some different toys and radio-controlled toys; we're slowing expanding our art selection as well."

...or something for your barbecue or shop?

Finally, we popped into Centennial Supply where owner, Aaron Goertzen, said they've got it all for the grill master in your life.

"We've got barbecues, smokers, pellet smokers, rubs and sauces. We've got spatulas, grilling ideas - we have some grilling professionals that work in-store."

There's also lots to pick from when it comes to power tools, including batteries. "Nobody will beat our price," said Goertzen, adding Centennial Supply also has everything one needs for their shop.

And then there's clothing from brands like Carhartt.

"Especially those toques that all your teenagers love. We've got jackets, vests. Everything you need to fill that tree."

For those looking to stay warm this winter, there's also Milwaukee's line of heated gear like vests, hoodies and softshell jackets for men and women.

"Everything to keep you warm in that rink or, if you don't want to be in the middle of that family gathering, you can go stand outside," joked Goertzen.

According to the PembinaValleyOnline poll, 35 per cent of respondents were nearly done their shopping, and only 20 per cent were done with their gifts wrapped and under the tree.
