Strathmore and the surrounding area have no shortage of talented athletes.

Here are the top five sports stories from 2024:

1. Jessica Sevick and women's eight team row to silver medal at Olympics

Team Canada won silver in rowing at the 2024 Olympics.

One of the rowers was Jessica Sevick, who is originally from Strathmore. Her team ended up winning second place by 0.67 of a second, right behind Great Britain.

First place went to Romania, almost 1,500 metres in front of Team Canada.

Sevick helped secure Canada's sixth Olympic medal in women's eight rowing. 

2. Chestermere woman wins silver during World Wakesurf Championships

Chestermere wakesurfer Jolene Allen took home silver from the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation World Wakesurf Championships in Hong Kong, China.

The event occurred in early November, with Allen having to ride in the dark as she was the last one to race.

Overall, Team Canada came in fourth place behind the United States, Hong Kong, and Ukraine.

3. Agra Risk Wheatland Kings see historic start to the season

It's been a historic season for the Junior B Agra Risk Wheatland Kings.

The Strathmore-based hockey team began the season 8-3 in the first 11 games, which was the best season start in franchise history.

As of December 20 the Wheatland Kings have 19 wins, 5 losses, and a single overtime loss.

4. Gallery: bull riding competition crowns the 'Last Cowboy Standing'

The Strathmore Ag Grounds were filled with roaring fans for the annual 'Last Cowboy Standing' competition.

Hundreds of people were at the Strathmore Ag Grounds in late September to see the 'Last Cowboy Standing' event.

The show featured 28 bull riders took part in an elimination-style competition. 

The rodeo ended up being awarded 'Event of the Year' in November by Bull Riders Canada. 

5. Strathmore golfer Emma Bittorf celebrates championship win

Local golfer Emma Bittorf won the title at the 2024 Canadian All Abilities Championship.

It was an exciting experience for Bittorf as she defeated three-time defending champion Tess Trojan.

This was her first time winning the title, and she thanked the Strathmore Golf Club for helping hone her skills.
