The Royal Canadian Legion in Strathmore is putting together a fundraiser to help disabled veteran Mike Fielding.

According to the Legion, Fielding had his car stolen earlier this month, and the vehicle was eventually found destroyed.

"The ignition column was punched out, the culprits damaged the front end of the vehicle, and with it being a lower-value car, they just wrote it off," said Kevin Armitage, sergeant at arms at the Legion. "Now poor Mike is without a car and the proper means to pay for one, so I'm trying to help him out and find him another second-hand car."

The Legion will host a fundraiser on Friday (Dec. 20) during the evening to help raise funds for the veteran.

"It's a gift exchange, silent auction, and a little blind auction. We're trying to make it a little fun for everyone who comes out to help us out," added Armitage. "We've already generated about $400 in cash donations, so that's awesome."

Tickets will be drawn, and a person can either pick a gift or steal one that has already been chosen. There will be a limit of two steals for any one gift.

"The fact that this little town comes out and helps is amazing. It's when people make their little efforts to be involved in their community, that's what I find so amazing," added Armitage.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Strathmore Legion and costs $10 for two tickets.
