A car crash on Boxing Day in Calgary led to the death of a nine-year-old girl.

According to Calgary police, the crash was at Southland Drive and Macleod Trail S. and involved multiple vehicles.

Officers say the incident began as a robbery at around 9:30 a.m. on Millrise Boulevard S.W. when a pharmacist was attacked before having their vehicle stolen.

The suspect allegedly sped away from police in the stolen vehicle, running a red light which ended with a five-vehicle collision.

Four people were sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries, with the young girl passing away in hospital hours later. The other victims include two adults and a child.

The suspect was arrested by police with charges pending.
