Tragedy has struck a close-knit Australian community after a beloved youth pastor was killed in a shark attack while spearfishing off Humpy Island in Queensland’s Keppel Bay Islands National Park.
Luke Walford, 40, was in the water with family members on Saturday afternoon when the attack occurred on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef according to local news reports.
Emergency services responded quickly after the incident was reported, but despite their efforts, Walford succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Cathedral of Praise, the church where Walford served for more than a decade, announced his passing on Facebook.
“It’s with deep sorrow that we share the tragic news of Pastor Luke Walford's passing. Last night, we learned that he was attacked by a shark while doing something he loved—spearfishing, a passion that was passed down to him by his father,” the church’s announcement read.
The post also highlighted Walford’s impact on the community: “I’ve had the privilege of watching Luke grow from a child to a remarkable young man. I dedicated him as a baby, and over the last 10 to 13 years, I’ve witnessed his incredible contributions as part of our church staff. He was truly a beloved figure, especially among our young people, children, and the entire congregation.”
Walford’s untimely death has left his family and congregation devastated. The church described him as “a man who truly loved God and loved people,” and said they are taking comfort in their faith during this difficult time.
“Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in the promises of God. We know that Luke is now with the Lord, resting in His presence because of God's exceedingly great and precious promises,” the statement added.
Walford leaves behind his wife and other grieving family members, including his mother. The church has asked for prayers for his family as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
Humpy Island, part of the Great Barrier Reef’s Keppel Bay Islands National Park, is a popular destination for diving and snorkeling. However, it is not immune to the risks associated with marine life. Shark attacks in the area, though rare, are still a reality.
Walford’s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief and tributes from those who knew him, with many describing him as a compassionate leader whose faith and love for others left an indelible mark on the community.
"This man was the most generous person I have ever met with his time to all those around him going out of his way to give all he had to others," one person commented on the church's post.
"Such shocking news, but what an incredible impact he had in his lifetime- an impact that is still unfolding … generations who Praise Jesus because of his testimony," another person wrote.
There have been four shark attacks in Australia in 2024, but none of them fatal, the BBC reports. Australia's last fatal shark attack came last December when a teenage boy was killed.
