Humboldt and District Community Services (HDCS) has had an impactful year in 2024, continuing its mission to ensure that all individuals have meaningful connections to their community. With the support of 26 dedicated staff members and 8 board members, the organization delivered 10 vital programs, making a tangible difference in the lives of many residents across Humboldt.

Juanine Korte, Director of HDCS, highlighted the organization's growth and commitment to providing inclusive support to the community.

"This year, we have remained focused on our vision of creating meaningful connections for all individuals," Korte said. "We are proud of the progress we've made and the positive impact we've had on people's lives."

A standout success for HDCS was the expansion of its Community Inclusion Support Services Program. The program exceeded expectations, reaching 90 individuals—far surpassing the initial goals set for the year. This program, which supports individuals, families, and caregivers, focuses on fostering long-term, positive outcomes. Korte emphasized the importance of the program’s continued growth.

"The growing demand for these services reflects the need for a supportive network that enhances the well-being of those we serve."

The 24th Annual Summer Program was another significant achievement, providing 29 participants with an enriching experience. "We are extremely grateful to our volunteers, staff, and partner organizations who helped make this summer program a success," Korte remarked. "Looking ahead, we are excited to celebrate the 25th year of this program and continue offering a meaningful and fulfilling summer experience for children and youth in the community."

HDCS also celebrated the success of its Inclusive Social Programming, including youth and adult social clubs and dances, which remain a cornerstone of community engagement. These events provide participants with a safe and welcoming space for social interaction, helping foster strong connections within the community.

The Humboldt and Area Supported Employment Program also made significant strides this year, helping individuals develop job readiness skills, earn certifications, and gain valuable career counseling. Through this program, several individuals successfully secured employment, and partnerships with local businesses were strengthened.

"Our work with local employers continues to grow, and we are proud to help individuals find meaningful employment opportunities," said Korte.

HDCS’ Work Crew program has been another valuable service, providing individuals with the chance to build key personal and employment skills. The crew's contributions included essential community tasks such as yard maintenance and cleanup, while also offering valuable experience in teamwork, time management, and task prioritization.

Additionally, the Employment Resource Center continues to support individuals on their job search journey, offering free resources such as resume assistance, job referrals, and access to computers and printing services.

HDCS has also focused on enhancing its facilities, with updates to Hilda Home, including fresh paint, new flooring, and landscaping in the backyard. These improvements were made to ensure a welcoming and comfortable environment for the individuals served by the organization.

A notable collaboration this year was HDCS’s partnership with SARC and Sobeys Humboldt on an episode of Untapped for AMI. The episode explored the vital relationships between service providers, job seekers, and employers, highlighting the importance of fostering inclusive employment opportunities.

"It was an eye-opening project that emphasizes the potential within the disability community," Korte stated. "I encourage everyone to watch the episode to learn more."

Korte also expressed deep appreciation for the organization's dedicated staff, whose passion and hard work are at the core of its success. "Our staff goes above and beyond to support some of the most vulnerable members of our community. I am extremely proud of the work they do," she said.

Looking ahead, HDCS is preparing for its 25th anniversary in 2025, reflecting on the unwavering support it has received from its staff, board, partners, and the broader community. "We are excited for the future and the continued opportunity to make a difference," Korte said. "Together, we will continue to foster connections and support the well-being of everyone in our community."
