Pharmasave in Portage la Prairie has been making significant strides in 2024, as the local pharmacy continues to expand services, offer new products, and strengthen its ties with the community. From exciting renovations to staff training and charitable involvement, Pharmasave is committed to enhancing its role as a vital resource for the people of Portage and beyond.
Expansion and New Services
Early in the year, Pharmasave wrapped up the final touches on an extensive expansion project, making the store bigger and better than ever. This update was just the beginning of the year’s busy schedule of improvements and initiatives. By spring, Heather, a member of the Pharmasave team, received specialized training through Innovative Medical, enabling her to supply braces covered by Manitoba Health with a doctor's prescription. Prior to this, local patients needing such braces had to travel to Winnipeg or Brandon for this service.
In May, Pharmasave owner Caitlin and front store manager Gino attended the Pharmasave National Conference in Ottawa. The conference provided them with the opportunity to connect with new vendors and explore exciting product offerings, ensuring Pharmasave stays on the cutting edge of health care needs in Portage la Prairie.
Community Involvement
One of the most highly anticipated events for the pharmacy was the grand re-opening on June 15, 2024, which marked the 4th anniversary of Pharmasave in Portage. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was attended by Mayor Knox, was an exciting way to celebrate the expansion and all the ways Pharmasave continues to grow and serve its community.
Pharmasave’s commitment to supporting patients didn’t stop there. During the summer, Heather launched a cold machine rental program designed to assist patients recovering from knee, hip, or shoulder replacements. The program aims to provide relief during rehabilitation, making it more accessible to those who need it.
In September, the pharmacy took another important step by hiring in-house nurse Barb. With years of experience, Barb led the pharmacy’s flu and COVID vaccination campaign, organizing mobile clinics to visit workplaces and assisted living homes in the area. Her expertise has been crucial in maintaining public health during flu season and beyond.
Special Training and Support
In November, Heather expanded her expertise yet again by attending two days of training in Mississauga, Ontario, to provide bra fitting and support for patients who have undergone mastectomies. This new service, which is offered in collaboration with Central Plains Cancer
Services, ensures that individuals in the Portage la Prairie area receive specialized care during their recovery.
Additionally, in December, team members Natalie and Caitlin completed a six-week online Palliative Care course through the University of Victoria. This training allows them to offer enhanced palliative care services, with Pharmasave now stocking a range of palliative medications that other pharmacies may not carry. This ensures that patients in the area can receive timely medication without delays.
Community Engagement
In December, Pharmasave joined in the festive spirit by entering its first-ever PharmaFloat in the Rotary Santa Parade of Lights. The team had a fantastic time, celebrating the holiday season and connecting with their community. Looking ahead to the new year, Pharmasave will be the game day sponsor for the Portage Terriers on January 4th. The team encourages everyone to come out to the game, meet the PharmaCrew, and enjoy the event, with the possibility of seeing a special guest: Pharmasaurus Rex!
Pharmasave is proud to continue living, working, and growing alongside the Portage la Prairie community. Whether it’s through expanded services, specialized care, or active participation in local events, the pharmacy remains deeply committed to providing excellent service and supporting the health of local residents in every way possible.
