2024 has proven to be a transformative year for the Village of Muenster, with significant progress in infrastructure improvements, zoning updates, and community growth. Chief Administrative Officer Jan Sylvestre shared insights on the year's achievements, emphasizing the village's commitment to long-term sustainability and development.

"Well, in 2024, we had a lot of changes in town in terms of our public works infrastructure," said Sylvestre. "There were a lot of changes and improvements to our road services and drainage systems. It's always an ongoing process, but we've made huge strides in addressing the infrastructure demands that were top priorities for the community."

Despite the progress, Sylvestre noted that many of these projects remain works in progress. "It's never a total 100% finished project, but we are set in a good position for next spring and the upcoming construction season. We hope to continue improving our roads, drainage, and overall environment, making things safer and healthier for everyone."

One of the key areas of focus has been updating the village's planning and development tools. Sylvestre highlighted the need to modernize Muenster’s zoning bylaws and official community plan, which were last revised in 1986.

"We've been working closely with professional planners and taking a regional perspective to ensure that we accommodate the current development opportunities of the area, while sustaining the quality of life for our residents," she said.

The village's planning efforts include ensuring space for both existing and future residents, as well as new business owners.

"We want to make sure there's space for everything—from our current residents to new community members and businesses," Sylvestre added.

In addition to infrastructure and planning, Muenster has seen growth in its local business community. The newly renovated municipal office building on Railway Street has allowed for more efficient operations and even accommodated a new business: a massage therapy clinic run by local entrepreneur Sydney Hilbert.

"It's a great addition to the community, and it helps keep overhead costs down," Sylvestre explained.

Further contributing to the village’s development, the Parkland Regional Library's Muenster branch has undergone significant improvements, doubling its floor space and expanding its offerings to the community.

"Monica Kiefer has done a tremendous job enhancing the library, and the expanded space allows her to provide more programming for residents of all ages.”

Muenster’s residential and commercial growth has also been on the rise, particularly on the west side of town. Sylvestre highlighted the availability of commercial lots, some with proximity to the railway, and future opportunities for further development.

"We're looking into the possibility of expanding the village's footprint, including zoning areas for residential, commercial, and potentially industrial growth."

One of the most anticipated developments in Muenster is the construction of a new childcare center, spearheaded by the Muenster Cooperative Childcare Organization.

"They’ve made huge strides over the past couple of years, and with provincial backing, they’re ready to move forward," Sylvestre said. The project will provide much-needed childcare services for young families in the community, further enhancing Muenster’s appeal as a family-friendly place to live.

Entering a new year, Sylvestre reflected on the village’s progress and extended a warm holiday message to the residents.

"On behalf of the village of Muenster and our newly elected council, we’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays," he said. "Stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy some well-deserved downtime.

It’s been a year of great change, and we are excited to see what the future holds for our community."
