The Alberta government has unveiled a new web map for interested Albertans to check out.
"The Alberta Geographical Names Web Map opens the door for Albertans’ curiosity to wander from the comfort of their home. The new web map offers easy access to learn about the rich cultures, people, and history that have helped shape our province," mentioned the province in a news release.
The program showcases information on close to 9,000 place names across Alberta.
"Whether a person wants to know how their hometown got its name, or if a particular historical figure has a place named after them, Albertans can easily search the map by name, location, or the type of place," added the provincial government.
According to the news release, the web map can be helpful for teachers and students while checking out notable spots and people in Alberta's history.
"It provides history enthusiasts of all kinds a simple way to gather quick facts on a place name’s history, culture or language of origin, thematic association, and the federal and provincial adoption dates," says the province.
The map says Strathmore was a Canadian Pacific Railway station and was established in 1884. It was named for Claude Bowes-Lyon, the 13th Earl of Strathmore who lived from 1824-1904.
"Lord Strathmore was the grandfather of Queen Elizabeth (1900–2002) and great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II," says the release.
