The City of Chestermere is reminding residents to stay safe on ice surfaces.

"Fluctuating temperatures and water conditions can impact the time it takes to freeze an amount of ice that can safely support recreation," said the city in a news release.

According to the city, ice colour like blue is considered the strongest, white is formed by wet snow freezing on the ice, and grey ice is dangerous.

Staff with the city said ice thickness can also be measured to determine safety with 15 cm for walking or skating alone, 20 cm for groups of skaters or games, and 25 cm for snowmobiles.

"Floating ice on open waters like ponds, rivers, and lakes is never considered 100 per cent safe, regardless of thickness. Remember to check back or visit our ice thickness page for details on ice conditions," added the city.
