January is Alzheimer's Awareness month, a time to educate and inspire action about dementia.
Regional Lead, Jennifer Simms from the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories explains that dementia, which can affect individuals at any age, is a progressive condition causing cognitive decline severe enough to impact daily life. She emphasizes that dementia is not a normal part of aging and encourages reducing risks by staying social, eating well, visiting doctors, and protecting against head injuries.
“The increase of Albertans living with dementia is expected to grow by 286% by 2050.”

Resources are available for those affected by dementia, including support groups, community presentations, and online tools. Simms encourages caregivers and families to educate themselves and combat stigma.
“Reaching out to your local Alzheimer’s Society can connect you to a dementia navigator and provide valuable programs,” she says.
Exciting plans for 2025 include awareness events like a community presentation at the Grande Prairie Public Library on January 29th, an awareness hockey game in March with the GP Storm, and the IG Wealth Walk for Alzheimer’s in May. Also, Jennifer encourages communities to light up in blue and participate in local awareness events.
