A big cornhole tournament is heading to Strathmore later this year.

Lance Smith, president of the Strathmore Huskers Cornhole Club says the event will be held on April 11-12 at the Curling Club.

"That helps you acquire points towards nationals which are in Edmonton this year."

According to Smith, the team will also be hosting provincials in July, and he mentioned it's easy to register.

"All you have to do is pay a Canada cornhole membership and you can play in these events."

Smith says the tournament is a way for people to get points and jump into the elite 16.

"A couple of top players in the country are from Alberta that will be wanting to come to these events to get points toward their national rankings."

Smith mentioned it's a tiered tournament where players can compete against others on the same level.

The club is just starting up its new season on Tuesday (Jan. 7) at the Pavilion building at the Ag Grounds.

"We're hoping that numbers will go up here now that we're back into a bit of a bigger venue," added Smith.

The team will also be moving into the Curling Club on a semipermanent basis at the start of April.

"We'll probably be running two to three days a week. We'll probably be running a singles event one night a week," explained Smith.

The team will also host senior's night on Tuesdays and league play will run throughout the summer until nationals from August 13-17.

Doors open on April 11 at 6 p.m. and April 12 will see doubles start at 9 a.m.
