The Strathmore and Wheatland County Hamper Society received a cheque from Canadian Tire on Tuesday (Jan. 7).
In total the society received $4,244 from the organization, with all of the funds raised by the department store's customers.
"We ask all the customers at the till if they want to donate to support a family in need, and sometimes we get $5, $10, $2, $20," said Stephanie Cody, manager at Canadian Tire. "It's been a rewarding year."
According to Marilyn Galvin, president of the hamper society, the funds will go towards next year's hamper campaign.
"This year it will be going towards toys. Canadian Tire is all about toys for us, and we appreciate them stocking as much as they do because it's helped us tremendously."
Last year's hamper campaign was the largest in the society's history, as volunteers completed 289 food hampers and 378 toy bags.
"That's up 40-some from last year," said Galvin. "It's amazing what we did this year. My reaction is pretty emotional that the need is there."
Galvin also claimed that they wouldn't have been able to achieve their goals if not for the generosity of the community.
Cody told StrathmoreNow it's important for local businesses to help community groups in need.
"We're very passionate about this every single year. We know it's a hard time for a lot of families in Strathmore."
The hamper society had itsĀ annual distribution day on December 20.
