The Strathmore Venom Lacrosse Club is hosting several Try It Sessions as registrations open.
According to President Tom Craig, the sessions will run throughout January and February to allow locals to try lacrosse.
"We find that Try It Sessions are the most successful ability for us to have control over our programming and get kids out with sticks in hands."
Craig added that the sessions have a high turnout of kids joining the club, and he expects about 20 kids per session.
"This year we're doing something a little different. We're also bringing in our goalie gear, and any child between 11 and 17 years old can try and suit up as a goalie. We're really pushing goaltending this year, as it is probably the most important position on the floor at any given time."
There will also be loaner sticks available, with players only needing to bring a helmet and gloves. Craig mentioned that a hockey helmet and gloves work just fine.
The Try It Sessions will take place at the Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre on the following days:
- January 14 from 5 to 6 p.m.
- January 25 from 3 to 4 p.m.
- January 28 from 5 to 6 p.m.
- February 15 from 3 to 4 p.m.
The event is free to attend with no registration required. However, residents are encouraged to bring a donation to the Wheatland County Food Bank.
"Normally we just do this as a free event, but we saw this as an opportunity to help people in need. We know that, in this day and age, food banks are being accessed more than in the past," added Craig.
Registration is open on the club's website for those who are interested in joining the Venom lacrosse club.
