Rocky View County has announced a contest to help recycle plastic baler twine.

According to the county, the Great Twine Round-up runs until May 31, with the contest including $12,000 in cash prizes.

"Bring as much used plastic baler twine you can round up to a participating Alberta collection site for a chance to win a cash prize," wrote the county on its website. "The more twine you recycle, the better your chances of winning."

The county claims that donating twine will help keep plastic out of landfills, protect soil and air, and conserve energy.

The contest is open to all Alberta 4-H clubs, agricultural charities, and Alberta residents. People under 18 can participate with parental consent.

To enter, residents must pick up Cleanfarms collection bags, fill them with twine, and return them to a participating collection site.

"By getting your farming community to recycle plastic baler twine, you’re showing the world what awesome Albertan farmers do, and you could walk away with some cash prizes while doing your part," added the county.

The event is hosted by Cleanfarms, an agricultural industry stewardship organization that serves Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec.
