A routine investigation of a Mossbank taxidermist's business turned into a lengthy investigation that led to numerous charges, significant fines and the seizure of dozens of wildlife exhibits.
It began in February of 2023 when Assiniboia conservation officers visited Northern Reflections Taxidermy in Mossbank, discovering a scene that was described as "overwhelming".
According to the provincial government, the shop was filled floor to ceiling with exhibits, antlers hunger from ceiling and there were few paths available to walk through, it wasn't long before issues arose as officers began to inspect each animal.
Investigation of business records revealed missing and out of date information, and the proprietor Brandon McCrea, was unable to provide a current taxidermy permit. Two follow-up inspections were conducted, including one with a search warrant, during which officers found untagged wildlife, some stored in outbuildings and freezers, alongside incomplete or missing records. When it was all said and done, officers seized 144 wildlife exhibits, a laptop and record books.
McCrea plead guilty to offences under The Wildlife Act in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on September 23, 2024, including operating a taxidermy business without a license and possessing wildlife illegally. He was fined a total of $7,250 plus surcharges and 144 wildlife exhibits were forfeited to the Crown.
Saskatchewan has laws in place regulating possession and handling of wildlife which are in place to support conservation and ensure animals are taken legally and ethically. Following those requirements ensure wildlife is properly accounted for at every stage of harvest, including when a taxidermist is hired to preserve an animal.
