Dr. Joni McNeely was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal late last year.

McNeely was presented the award by Bow River MP Martin Shields on December 7 in recognition of her leadership with the Wheatland & Area Hospice Society.

"Being a family doctor, I always thought about the impact of our community and our families on our individual health, and in general the health of our community," said McNeely. "End of life, palliative care is just a natural extension of that. Caring for people through the whole cycle of life."

McNeely has been involved with the hospice society since 2015. She went through several positions before becoming chair of the society in 2018.

McNeely said that she was nominated for the award by Cardston-Siksika MLA Joseph Schow, who had also presented her with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2023.

"I think as he's gotten to know our area a bit more, he's recognized just how successful we have been," added McNeely. "Not only in providing end-of-life services but in fundraising for our hospice at Kinsmen Park."

The Coronation Medal is presented to residents who have made a significant contribution to Canada. Donovan Arnaud, president of the Strathmore Legion, was presented with a medal at the same event.
