There’s confusion over whether the federal government will extend the deadline for making charitable donations eligible for the 2024 tax year.

Keith Stewart, Regional Development Director for Adult and Teen Challenge of Central Canada, says many organizations are waiting for official confirmation.

Stewart explains that donations mailed by December 31 are typically eligible for a tax receipt, but this year, a postal strike caused delays.

"We heard last week that the government announced their intent to extend the deadline," he said, but added it would require legislative changes.

In late December, the Finance Department stated that the government would introduce legislation to make the changes once Parliament resumes in the new year, which would typically happen in January.

Stewart says with Parliament prorogued as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation, it’s unclear when any decision will be finalized. Stewart highlights the importance of clarity for donors and organizations, noting, “We would certainly welcome that and we’re just waiting for official word.”

In the meantime, Stewart looks forward to the organization's upcoming Sled for Eternity fundraiser, scheduled for January 25 at Falcon Lake.
