A routine inspection of a Saskatchewan taxidermy business in 2023 sparked an investigation that more recently ended in heavy fines, criminal charges, and the seizure of over 140 wildlife exhibits.
On September 23, 2024, the owner of Northern Reflections Taxidermy, Brandon McCrea from Mossbank, pleaded guilty to operating a taxidermy business without a licence and possessing wildlife illegally.
Assiniboia conservation officers paid a visit to the business in Mossbank in February 2023, where they were met with a shop cluttered with animal trophies and antlers.
Conservation officers found a handful of issues, beginning with the fact that McCrea, was unable to provide a current taxidermy permit.
Additionally, a large number of animals were missing tags or tagged incorrectly, improperly notched, and the business was missing records and had out out-of-date information.
A search warrant was executed during a follow-up inspection where more untagged wildlife was recovered from outbuildings and freezers.
McCrea was given a $7,250 fine and officers seized a total of 144 wildlife exhibits, a laptop, and business records.
He was sentenced at the Moose Jaw Provincial Court under The Wildlife Act.
