Family Literacy Day 2025 is happening on January 27, with this year’s theme being ‘Learn to be Green, Together’ putting an environmentally friendly spin on the event which highlights the importance of reading and engaging in literacy related activities as a family.
It will be a busy time for educators, community-based organizations, and those at Moose Jaw Literacy who are working diligently to mark the occasion with a number of activities.
Christine Boyczuk, Coordinator at Moose Jaw Literacy, said that the events will actually begin a bit early in the city, kicking off on January 25 with a literacy-themed Dadurday at the Moose Jaw Early Years Family Resource Centre and events at the Moose Jaw Public Library.
“Our bigger celebration is the 27th, in the morning 9:30 to 12. There are all kinds of activities, crafts and things that involve the theme of recycling, reducing and reusing.” she explained.
“Planting seeds, making a bird feeder, recycling fun, just creating things with recycled materials, doing all kinds of crafts and a scavenger hunt.”
Boyczuk said that there will also be a puppet show, songs and several door prizes to be had during the event at the Moose Jaw Early Years Family Resource Centre.
The Moose Jaw Public Library and schools within the city are also getting the spirit, hosting events of their own, including St. Agnes School which will be including Family Literacy Day activities in their upcoming Cultural Fair.
“It’s quite amazing to see, St. Agnes School has a very diverse student population,” said Boyczuk.
“They will have all the different food that people bring, they set up a teepee inside the gym, there is lots of dancing and other things that families do together.”
She said that she is excited to bring an environmentally friendly aspect to this year’s event.
“Environmental awareness is so important, that is why we are kicking it off at the zero to five level, this is something they can inspire their parents to do, and it’s so fun to watch when the kids are learning. The smiles that they, and their parents have, it’s just so much fun and learning should be fun.”
