The Feed it Forward Project in Chestermere is a non-profit organization focused on giving back to the community.
Sherry Phillips and her children created the free food resource in May of 2023 to support local families in times of need.
According to Phillips, the Chestermere location alone assisted almost 300 families in 2024 and reached another 1,850 Calgary families. The food the organization rescued has reached a retail value of over $130,000 says Phillips.
The Feed it Forward Project has not only provided thousands of meals for families but has also diverted over 95,000 lb of greenhouse gases.
"With the recent increased cost of living, we have seen a need for short-term, immediate assistance to individuals and families that may be struggling with food insecurity," mentioned Phillips.
With many families living on tight budgets, unexpected bills can leave people unable to afford enough food for the family explained Phillips.
"We provide emergency food and small hampers to get families to their next pay cheques."
The charity group relies on private food donations from Chestermere residents and corporate food donations through a non-profit app.
The food hampers are given out through Phillips and her family at one of their pantry locations.
"Feed it Forward Chestermere supports a number of locations in Calgary with food resources as well. These locations are given privately to individuals in need of assistance," said Phillips.
