Calling all local writers, essayists, poets, and those who simply love to tinker with the written word.

The Humboldt & District Gallery is excited to announce its third annual Local Writer Series and this year it’s bringing back an old favourite – a Poetry Slam!

The Local Writers Series will consist of a Poetry Slam on Thursday, January 23, a Local Writers Night on Wednesday, February 5, and a Youth Writers Night on Wednesday, February 12. All of these events will take place under the stunning canopy of butterflies that will be on display at the Gallery until February 22.

Everyone who enjoys trying to find just the right word is invited to sign up for the (beginner friendly) Poetry Slam! All participants will be given three fun prompts to inspire them – a historical artefact related to Humboldt local history, a very random word, and three seconds of intro music to set the vibe – as well as 45 minutes to write whatever inspires you. After the 45 minutes is up, writers are invited to share their work.

On Wednesday, February 5 we will host a traditional Local Writers Nights where participants have 10 minutes to read original work. Any local writers who have not yet read at a Local Writers Night over the past two years are encouraged to sign up. Any writers who would like to return and read a new piece are encouraged to sign up, but past readers will be chosen randomly on February 1 if there are still any open spots left.

Finally, on Wednesday, February 12 we will be hosting our third Youth Writers Night at the Gallery. Budding writers aged 12 to 17 are invited to read a piece of original material. Parental consent forms are available at the Museum.

For anyone who would like to sign up to read or for the Poetry Slam, call 306.682.5226 or email info@humboldtmuseum.ca
