Whether you’re watching your budget, aiming to reduce your carbon footprint, or just out there looking for treasure, you can do it AND support those in need at Portage MCC Thrift Shop, where shopping locally has a positive global impact.
Kevin Hamm is the general manager of the Portage MCC Thrift Shop- a charitable organization that donates tens of thousands of dollars to local charities each year.
“The two main ways we do this is through fundraising days for local charities- this year we gave over $24,000 to six local charities,” Hamm notes. “And also by freely providing material goods through our local partners- in 2024, we directly helped more than 100 families and individuals in urgent need with over $12,000 worth of goods.”
Recently, Portage MCC partnered with CMHA, the Reaching Home Program, the Portage Family Resource Centre, and the Prairie Pregnancy Support Center, as well as the fire department and various government agencies… to name a few.
“Portage MCC is literally putting clothes on the backs of some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” Hamm states. “When a family loses their possessions in a fire, or when newcomers settle locally, it’s our store that provides needed clothing, housewares, and furniture.”
Hamm says that by shopping at and donating to Portage MCC, you are make a difference. He notes that, because of the generous donations and the tireless labor of the volunteers and staff, Portage MCC is able to provide a steady supply of affordable and in many cases, free winter clothing to those experiencing hardships.
“When we see someone who is not dressed for conditions, or is clearly struggling, we privately provide what they need at no charge.”
Hamm shares that the organization’s friends and partners in local agencies regular report back about the positive impact of their assistance.
“The fact that these agencies can now devote their efforts to programs and services without having to operate clothes closets or thrift stores of their own means more efficient and effective local services for everyone.”
A consistent supply of quality items is essential, and all donations are welcome. The current most in-demand items are warm parkas, mittens, and gloves, especially for men, as well as quality bedding.
