January to March is mating season for coyotes, which can become an issue for local pet owners.
The government of Alberta has provided some tips on how to keep your pets safe as coyotes act more aggressively than usual.
According to the province, coyotes may be gathered in groups looking for mates.
"They tend to be more territorial and aggressive toward dogs at this time of year. Coyotes may try to entice your dog away and attack it to eliminate the threat," wrote the province. "Keeping your dog leashed at all times is the best way to keep it safe."
It's also recommended to not leave your pet unsupervised while outdoors and to refrain from having them tethered outside, especially during nighttime.
"Coyotes tend to be most active between dusk and dawn," added the province.
If you spot a coyote, it's recommended to make the experience as unpleasant as possible for the animal, even if you're not concerned about problems with coyotes. This could include responding to their presence aggressively and not turning away or running.
Coyote pups are typically born between April and the middle of May.
For situations involving aggressive encounters, it is recommended to report the details to Report-A-Poacher at 1-800-642-3800.
