A newly recruited radiologist is now practising in Grande Prairie, improving access to imaging tests for local and area residents.
Dr. Napo Kasirye-Mbugua is a radiologist with sub-specialty training in diagnostic neuroradiology. She moved to Grande Prairie in August and is now practising at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital. A radiologist interprets medical images, helping to determine a patient’s treatment plan, as needed. At the hospital, Dr. Kasirye-Mbugua’s work includes performing and diagnosing imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasounds and MRIs.
“It is great news to welcome Kasirye-Mbugua to Grande Prairie,” says Nolan Dyck, MLA for Grande Prairie. “We are fortunate to have her join our local healthcare team. Her arrival will enhance access to care for not only those in Grande Prairie but across northern Alberta.”
“Dr. Kasirye-Mbugua will help ensure patients continue to have access to imaging services like MRIs, X-rays and ultrasounds when they need them,” adds Ron Wiebe, MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti. “This will help improve access to healthcare for many Albertans.”
Dr. Kasirye-Mbugua received her medical training at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. She completed her fellowship with the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, where she also obtained a master’s degree in radiology. She also completed a diagnostic neuroradiology fellowship at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.
"Welcoming Dr. Kasirye-Mbugua to Grande Prairie is great news for the local medical team and for residents of the North Zone,” says Dr. Jane Ojedokun, Zone Medical Director in the North Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS). “Her training offers specialized care that residents across northern Alberta will benefit from.”
Outside of work, Dr. Kasirye-Mbugua enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, walking, hiking and cycling.
As part of an overall physician recruitment strategy, AHS has three physician resource planners in the North Zone who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. These planners work closely with partner organizations, such as the Rural Health Professionals Action Plan and local, independent community physician attraction and retention committees.
