RCMP responded to 149 crashes throughout Alberta during the winter storm that hit the province on Thursday (Jan. 16).
Police warned drivers to stay off the road that evening as bad weather caused dangerous road conditions across the province. According to RCMP, the majority of the reported collisions were in central Alberta.
Between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, police reported:
- 71 collisions in central Alberta
- 28 collisions in eastern Alberta
- 24 collisions in southern Alberta
- 26 collisions in western Alberta
There were also six injuries reported, with one in southern Alberta, two in western Alberta, and three in central Alberta.
StrathmoreNow reached out to RCMP for collision numbers specific to the area, but police were not able to provide them.
"Please keep in mind that this number will grow over the next few days as reports will continue to come into various detachments," wrote Alberta RCMP.
Officers also stressed that residents should be advised not to travel during hazardous road conditions following a police advisory.
"You are not only putting your own life at risk but also risking other lives, including all first responders," added RCMP.
The winter storm brought 90 km/h winds to the Strathmore area. A wind warning and blowing snow advisory were issued on Thursday but wrapped up on Friday morning.
