The winter season has the Strathmore Overnight Shelter operating near full capacity.
According to Elisabeth Karp, executive director of the shelter, they usually see an increase during the colder months.
"We changed our capacity. We were allowed 20 to begin with, but now we're allowed a total of 30 beds and around 40 people in to feed them and stuff like that."
The shelter increased its capacity after installing a series of bunk beds and received a grant allowing them to be open 24 hours a day.
"We're now open during the day as well, so that's super helpful in tracking the clients and not having to send them out in the cold weather."
Karp mentioned that they receive a lot of requests, as many of the shelters around the area are also operating near full capacity.
"We're here to service the Wheatland area, so we first and foremost try to make sure you find a shelter in the city if you're from there."
The shelter is always looking for more volunteers, especially between 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to help with the dinner rush.
"There's also a list on our webpage of items that we are in need of. Things like coffee, garbage bags, and day-to-day things that we use a lot of," said Karp. "We serve three meals a day here, and we also have snacks and things like that in between."
Karp made sure to thank the community for its support of the shelter since it opened its doors.
"We don't want anyone freezing to death outside. The reason we applied to open the shelter was because of the fatalities. People froze to death. There was nowhere else for people to be or go."
