The provincial government is granting $1.5 million to Wellspring Alberta to support people affected by cancer.
The investment will take place over the next 15 months and will aid Wellspring Alberta in delivering essential care for patients.
The Alberta government believes people in rural and remote areas need extra support when it comes to health care.
"As a community-based organization that provides emotional and mental support for Albertans affected by cancer, this funding will ensure Wellspring can continue delivering its programs and explore expanding its offerings, which are focused primarily in rural and remote areas," said a news release.
The funding will go towards programs like peer support, counselling services, and connecting families with caregivers who have experience with lost loved ones due to the disease.
“Cancer affects many lives across the province, and this funding will help ensure Albertans have the support they need as they navigate their cancer journey. By collaborating with health partners, we are taking concrete steps to build a more sustainable and equitable health system for Albertans,” added Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health.
According to the release, the funding will help reduce pressure on the care system and provide more support to cancer patients and their families.
"By providing cancer patients and caregivers with the support they need, this initiative aims to improve mental health, reduce emergency room visits, and decrease hospitalization frequency, ultimately leading to better overall health outcomes and more efficient use of health system resources."
Wellspring Alberta provides over 70 programs throughout the province and works closely with Alberta Health Services to deliver proper support care.
