A hair salon in Strathmore was shut down for most of the week following a cyberattack.

Runway Hair Design's booking system was affected on Tuesday (Jan. 21), which led to the store being closed for the following days.

"We got an e-mail from Milano Software, and it said that they were informed of a ransomware attack targeting the salon and spa industry," said Joshua Neiszner, marketing coordinator at Runway Hair Design.

"That's basically all that we got from them. They kind of just left it up to us to deal with."

Neiszner couldn't explain exactly why the cyberattack was targeting salons, but he believes the software may have provided an easy in for the hackers.

"We lost all of the data on our computers because most of our files were encrypted by the hackers."

After getting their computers fixed, the salon was back up and running as of Friday morning.

Neiszner added that he was disappointed in the response they received from Milano.

"They've given us absolutely zero information on what is going on. I think I've called their tech department about 30 times with no answers. They've left us completely in the dark."

The salon was allegedly attacked by Medusa ransomware, which threatens to release private information unless a ransom is paid. Medusa is also known to publish stolen data on its social media pages.

Runway claims that no client data was compromised in the attack.

StrathmoreNow reached out to Milano for comment on the cyberattack but did not receive a response by publication time.
