A Manitoba mother is facing parental abduction charges after attempting to flee the country with her children.
Shortly after 7 p.m. on Thursday, Steinbach RCMP received a report of a possible parental abduction involving two girls, ages 12 and 8.
The pair were supposed to be picked up from school by their 47-year-old father from La Broquerie. However, when he arrived, he was informed that his 45-year-old wife had left with them.
He believed they were attempting to leave the country, so he contacted RCMP.
Officers quickly learned the mother and her two children had made their way to the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport at around 1:20 p.m. where they had boarded a flight heading to Toronto.
Police in Ontario were notified and shortly before 8 p.m. the Peel Regional Police Service located the mother and her two children attempting to board a flight destined to Turkey.
The 45-year-old female was taken into police custody on charges of parental abduction. Arrangements are now being made to have her transported back to Manitoba for court.
The two children were placed into care and will be returned back to Manitoba.
Steinbach RCMP continue to investigate.
