Forty ringette teams from across Alberta came to Strathmore for the annual Laurie Morton Ruppe Memorial Tournament over the weekend.

The event took place between Friday (Jan. 24) and Sunday, with teams ranging in age from four to 19 years old.

"It went really well. It seemed to go smoothly, and things stayed on schedule. The players all really seemed to be enjoying themselves," said event organizer Pamela Betke. "We got a fair number of compliments on how well it went and how much fun the girls had."

There were also raffle baskets and a photo studio for players and families alike.

One of the players was Asia McIntyre, who visited from Lethbridge to take part in the event.

"We were here last year, and we try to make it to this tournament as much as we can. The timing is great, and there is usually some good competition," said McIntyre.

"Getting to spend time with my team is amazing. We've been really lucky this year to have a phenomenal group of girls."

Betke said that the tournament is a popular event for ringette players throughout the province.

The tournament is named after Laurie Morton Ruppe, who was instrumental in bringing the sport of ringette to Strathmore.

"She was a coach, a player, and sat on the board of directors from when Strathmore Minor Ringette started up," added Betke. "When she passed away, the board made the decision to name the tournament after her because of the contribution she made to the sport in town."

It was a successful tournament for the Strathmore teams as well, with medalists in all of their divisions.
