The Grande Prairie RCMP plainclothes support sections were busy in 2024 helping out frontline policing operations, helping to make Grande Prairie safer.
The Grande Prairie RCMP General Investigations Section (GIS) respond to the most serious and complex investigations in the area. GIS also supports front line policing to work through more comprehensive investigations. In 2024, GIS assisted in 269 investigations, supporting over 129 judicial authorizations, advancing Grande Prairie’s most serious and sensitive police cases.
The Grande Prairie Special Investigations Unit (SIU) specializes in sexual and intimate partner violence related offences. In total, the SIU progressed over 1176 investigations throughout 2024. SIU also provides guidance and oversight to Grande Prairie Detachments sexual and intimate partner violence related investigations, assisting in over 2526 files.
The Grande Prairie RCMP Drug Section progressed over 176 investigations to help reduce harm caused by the illicit drug trade in the Grande Prairie area. Throughout 2024, the Drug Section seized:
- 2.9 kilograms of cocaine
- 792 grams of fentanyl
- 148 fentanyl pills
- 20 litres (400 doses) of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB)
- 15 000 Isotonitazene pills
- 2.2 kilograms of methamphetamine
- 3344 counterfeit prescription pills
- $121 414 in currency as proceeds of crime
- 4 handguns
- 2 sawed off shotguns
- 1 rifle
- 160 200 in illegal cigarettes
These seizures led to 69 criminal charges laid and the arrest of 22 persons.
The Grande Prairie Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) focuses enforcement efforts in crime hotspots or areas experiencing high crime volume. CRU also targets offenders who are known to cause the greatest amount of harm to the community. In 2024 CRU assisted in over 646 investigations resulting in the seizure of:
- 16 crime guns
- 700 grams of cocaine
- 2.1 kilogram of methamphetamine
- $40 000 in currency as proceeds of crime
These investigations also resulted in:
- 40 people being charged for drug, property and firearms related offences
- Recovery of 55 stolen vehicles.
CRU has also progressed files involving significant community attention around; community mail theft, shoplifting and identity theft.
Staff Sergeant Billy GROENEN of the Grande Prairie RCMP who oversees GIS, SIU and CRU states that “Our plainclothes units work together to support our frontline police with the mutual goal to enhance public safety while reducing community harm.”
