With impending tariffs brewing south of the border that could come into play as early as February 1, NDP leader Carla Beck is calling on Premier Scott Moe to reconvene the Legislature in an emergency session.

If U.S. President Donald Trump makes good on his promise to levy 25 percent across the board tariffs, Beck wants to see MLAs back in their seats dealing with the situation in order to protect Saskatchewan jobs and industry.

“We need to be proactive, not reactive,” Beck said. “If U.S. President Trump imposes 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods on Feb. 1, as he has threatened to do, people expect us to be in the Legislature ready to stand up for Saskatchewan. If these tariffs are imposed, we will need to quickly debate and settle on a comprehensive support package to protect jobs, as well as take strong legislative measures to fight back.”

A release from the Opposition states that Beck and her shadow ministers have been engaging industry representatives in key areas such as mining, agriculture, and business, among others. The message for all groups has been similar; such tariffs have the potential to harm businesses by driving prices up on both sides of the border.

“Saskatchewan people expect their leaders to put partisan differences aside and work together for the sake of our whole province,” said Beck. “We’re prepared to stand up for our province and for our country and ensure that the livelihoods of Saskatchewan people are protected.”
