Several coyotes have been spotted roaming around Chestermere recently.
According to a news release from the city, the animals have been seen walking the perimeter of Chestermere Lake near West Chestermere Drive.
"Coyotes are usually shy around humans but can become habituated to people and lose their natural fear. Coyotes are often attracted to areas with a nearby food source. If you regularly see coyotes on your property, it’s likely a result of a nearby food source," added the city.
Staff with the city mentioned coyotes eat things like fruit, birds, dog feces, and small rodents.
"If you encounter a coyote in an urban setting, you must discourage the animal from returning. Coyotes can be easily scared by waving brooms or sticks or making noise in their general direction. If you encounter coyotes on your property, do not ignore them," said the release.
The city provided a few tips for residents to avoid issues with coyotes including not going near them or feeding them, cleaning cooking areas in yards, removing garbage and other food sources, cleaning up after pets, and going with pets in the yard and watching them.
As well, residents shouldn't run or turn away if they see a coyote. The animals can be scared away by shouting or waving their arms, waving sticks or banging them towards the creatures, maintaining eye contact, and backing away slowly.
