The RCMP is warning Strathmore residents about an ongoing phishing scam.
According to police, the unsolicited "delivery notices" are sent over text messages while impersonating the RCMP.
"The messages inform recipients that the RCMP was unable to deliver court documents and ask to reschedule to avoid missing a court date."
Police added that the text messages carry a link to a fraudulent RCMP website asking people to "reschedule the delivery."
"This is a scam. The RCMP does not issue notices by text messages," mentioned the RCMP in a news release.
Officers are asking people to delete the texts immediately and urge residents not to click the links.
"If you clicked on a link or provided personal details via the fraudulent website, contact your financial institution immediately and report it to your local police service."
The RCMP included a list of ways people can protect themselves from fraud:
- Don't click on unfamiliar links or download attachments.
- Never enter your personal information or banking details into unsolicited websites.
- Always verify the source of the message received.
"The RCMP will never ask to transfer money or make a payment, for remote access to your computer, personal information including your name, date of birth, phone number, email, or banking details via message," added the police.
If residents believe they're a victim of the scam they can call Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
